Charles County was formed in 1658. It was named after Charles Calvert (1637-1715), 3rd Baron Baltimore , who was governor of Maryland from 1661 to 1676 and 1679 to 1684.

There is a National Historic Site in the county - the Thomas Stone National Historic Site , also known as Habre de Venture. 38 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 13, 2017).

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census , Cecil County's population was 120,546 people in 41,668 households and 32,292 families. The population density was 262 people per square kilometer.
