Baron Baltimore , of Baltimore Manor in County Longford , was a hereditary British title of nobility from the Peerage of Ireland . The title expired in 1771.

history

King James I created the title in 1625 and awarded it to his Secretary of State George Calvert in recognition of his loyal service . Calvert had to resign from his post before, as he to the Roman Catholic Church converted was. The title subsequently passed on to the eldest of the Calvert sons and expired with the death of the sixth Baron Baltimore in 1771.

A special role the Lords Baltimore played in American history as the owner and Palatine ( Palatine Lord ) of the colony Maryland . George Calvert, who applied for the charter for the establishment of the colony, died shortly before it was granted in 1632. In American historiography, Lord Baltimore usually means his son Cecil Calvert . Baltimore , now the largest city in Maryland, is named after the first two title holders .
