Charles Calvert, 5th Baron Baltimore (born September 29, 1699 in England , † April 24, 1751 ibid) was Lord Proprietor of the colony of Maryland .

Life

Charles Calvert was the son of Benedict Leonard Calvert and his wife Charlotte Lee. His grandmother, Charlotte Lee, Countess of Lichfield, was the illegitimate daughter of King Charles II. After the death of his grandfather in early 1715, his father inherited the title of Baron Baltimore and also the ownership of the colony of Maryland . Benedict Leonard died just 2 months later.

He was followed by Charles as the 5th Baron Baltimore . He had converted to the Anglican faith and received Maryland back from King George I of England . In 1722 he had to sell Kiplin Hall for financial reasons. In 1727 Lord Baltimore named his brother Benedict Leonard Calvert governor of Maryland . In 1732 he briefly took over the governorship himself, but returned to England in the same year and made a political career there. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for St Germans from 1734 to 1741 and for Surrey from 1741 to 1751. He also served as Lord of the Admiralty from 1742 to 1744. Charles Calvert died in 1751.
