Charles Calvert, 3rd Baron Baltimore (born August 27, 1637 in England, † February 21, 1715 in London ) was Lord Proprietor of the colony of Maryland .

Life

Charles Calvert inherited in 1675 as the eldest son of Cæcilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore and his wife Anne Arundel († 1649) the title of Baron Baltimore and also the possession of the colony of Maryland . As early as 1661 he had been sent to Maryland as governor by his father. He held this office between 1661 and 1676 and again from 1679 to 1684. Then he returned to England. After the Glorious Revolution in England in 1688, the Catholic Calvert lost his claim to Maryland. Calvert was married four times, including Charlotte Lee, Countess of Lichfield, an illegitimate daughter of King Charles II. Charles Calvert died impoverished in England in 1715.

He had inherited his title and claim to Maryland to his second son, Benedict Leonard Calvert (1679–1715) , since his older son Cecil had died young . Benedict Calvert only survived his father by two months. He was followed by his son Charles as 5th Baron Baltimore (1699–1751). This converted to the Anglican faith. He received Maryland back from King George I of England .
