The Allegany County is a county in the US state of Maryland . At the 2010 census , the county had 75,087 people and a population density of 68.1 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Cumberland .

geography

The county is separated from Pennsylvania to the north by the Mason-Dixon Line . To the south, the Potomac River forms the border with West Virginia . Allegany County covers an area of ​​1,113 square kilometers; of which eleven square kilometers (1.02 percent) are water areas. It borders on the following counties:

history

Allegany County was formed in 1789 from parts of Washington County. It was named after the word oolikhanna from the Lenni Lenape language , which means beautiful river .
