Cumberland, Maryland is a middle town in the US state of Maryland in the United States . According to official estimates, the city had 20,758 inhabitants in 2006. The city lies on the Potomac River and was the western end of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal from 1850 to 1924 . Cumberland is the administrative seat of Allegany County . The city is named after William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland the son of the English King George II.

Demographics

According to the 2000 United States Census , Cumberland, Maryland has 21,518 residents in 9,538 households and 5,436 families. The population density is 916.0 people / km² . The city's population is divided into 92.54 percent white , 5.06% African-American , 0.26% Native American , 0.61% Asian , 0.02% from the Pacific Islands, and 0.26 percent of other races or 1.24% derive their descent from two or more ethnicities . 0.70 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Underage children live with their parents in 25.1 percent of households, married couples live in 39.7%, single mothers or single women live in 13.8%, and 43.0% have no families or unmarried couples. 37.8% of all households are headed by a single person and 18.5% of the apartments have a single person over 65 years of age.
