Henry William Hoffman

Henry William Hoffman (born November 10, 1825 in Cumberland , Maryland , †  July 28, 1895 there ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1857 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Hoffman attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Allegany County Academy . He then studied at Jefferson College in Pennsylvania until 1846 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1848, he began to work in this profession. Politically, he joined the short-lived American Party . In the congressional election of 1854 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Henry May on March 4, 1855 . Since he was not confirmed in 1856, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1857 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

In 1858, Hoffman competed unsuccessfully to return to Congress. Between 1858 and 1868 he was treasurer of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company . From February 1860 to July 1861 he held the ceremonial office of Sergeant at Arms in the US House of Representatives . He was then from 1861 to 1866 head of customs in Baltimore . Then Hoffman practiced again as a lawyer. From 1883 he served as a judge in Maryland. He held this office until his death on July 28, 1895.
