Benjamin Louis "Ben" Cardin (born October 5, 1943 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has been a member of the US Senate since January 3, 2007, representing the state of Maryland.

Family, education and work

Ben Cardin's grandfather Harris Kardonsky immigrated to the United States from western Ukraine with his wife Anna in 1905 . Cardin studied at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He then worked as a lawyer.

Cardin has been married to the teacher Myrna Edelman since 1964. Of his two children, the son Michael committed suicide in 1998.

Political career

From 1966 to 1986 Cardin was a member of the Maryland House of Representatives , from 1979 as its speaker . Cardin was elected as a Democrat to the US House of Representatives and represented there from January 3, 1987 to January 3, 2007, the third congressional constituency of the state of Maryland. There he was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means .

In the 2006 election , Cardin won the seat in the United States Senate that had become vacant due to the retirement of Paul Sarbanes . His Republican Party opponent was Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele . Cardin served on several committees. In August 2015 he was a member of the Foreign Relations Committee , the Committee on Environment and Public Works , and the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee .

In the 2012 Senate election , Cardin was re-elected for the first time with 55 to 27 percent of the vote against Republican Daniel Bongino. In the 2018 election , he prevailed against Republican Tony Campbell with 64 to 31 percent of the vote.

Cardin has been a member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, CSCE (US Helsinki Commission), since 1993 and was its chairman during the 111th and 113th Congresses.

Positions

Cardin voted against the invasion of Iraq in 2002 and subsequently remained a staunch opponent of the US invasion and occupation of Iraq. In 2006, he campaigned for the rapid withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

In March 2014 Cardin campaigned for massive US support for the interim government Yatsenyuk, which came to power in Ukraine in February 2014 .

The Office of the Anti-Semitism Commissioner of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Parliamentary Assembly Special Representative on Anti-Semitism, Racism, and Intolerance ( English Special Representative of the Parliamentary Assembly against Anti-Semitism, Racism and Intolerance ) has been held by Ben Cardin since 2015 . At the US Congress, he presented a bipartisan resolution condemning anti-Semitism and calling on world leaders to speak out against it. He was the main proponent of a Senate resolution that supported the goals of the Prague Conference on the Fortunes of the Holocaust Era. Cardin has held several hearings and events in the US Congress on combating anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance.
