Eli Jones Henkle (born November 24, 1828 in Westminster , Carroll County , Maryland , †  November 1, 1893 in Baltimore , Maryland) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1881 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After completing an academic education, Eli Henkle worked as a teacher in Anne Arundel County . After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Maryland and his license as a doctor in 1850, he began to work in Brooklyn in this profession. He also taught medicine at the Maryland Agricultural College in College Park . Henkle was also the curator of this educational institution. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1863 he was a member of the Maryland House of Representatives ; In 1864 he was a member of a commission to revise the state constitution. He was a member of the Maryland Senate in 1867, 1868, and 1870, and then again in the House of Representatives from 1872 to 1875. He also took part in July 1872 delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore.

In the congressional election of 1874 , Henkle was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Republican William Albert on March 4, 1875 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1881 . In 1880 it was no longer confirmed. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Eli Henkle no longer appeared politically. He moved to Chicago in 1889 but soon returned to Maryland. He died on November 1, 1893 in Baltimore, where he was also buried.
