The county is separated from Pennsylvania to the north by the Mason-Dixon Line . It has an area of 1,172 square kilometers; eight square kilometers (0.72 percent) of this is water. Adjacent counties are:

Carroll County was formed in 1837 from parts of Baltimore and Frederick Counties. It was named after Charles Carroll (1737-1832), one of the founding fathers of the United States.
During the American Civil War , the population fell rapidly as the population was divided on the pros and cons of secession . In 1863 decisive troop movements took place in the county around the Battle of Gettysburg with around 160,000 men.
One site in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Whittaker Chambers Farm , due to its historical significance . 60 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 12, 2017).
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census , Carroll County had 150,897 people in 52,503 households and 41,109 families. The population density was 336 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.7 percent white, 2.3 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.8 percent Asian and 0.3 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.0 percent of the population.
Of the 52,503 households, 39.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 66.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers, and 21.7 percent were non-families. 17.5 percent of all households were single households and 7.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.18.
27.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24, 30.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 10.8 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 37 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 97.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 94 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 60,021 USD , for a family is 66,430 USD. Males had a median income of $ 44,191 versus $ 30,599 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,829. About 2.7 percent of families and 3.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
