The St. Mary's County is a county in the US state of Maryland . The county seat is Leonardtown .

The county is located at the confluence of the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay . The mouth of the Potomac also forms the border with Virginia . Saint Mary's County covers an area of ​​1,582 square kilometers; of which 734 square kilometers are water surfaces. It is mostly surrounded by water and borders the following counties:

history

Saint Mary's County was formed as the first county in Maryland in 1637. It was named after Mary, the mother of Jesus . The first county seat was St. Marys City , one of the first permanent English settlements in North America and a port for the only Catholic colony.

Three sites in Saint Mary's County have National Historic Landmark status due to their historical significance , St. Mary's City Historic District , Sotterley Plantation House and West St. Mary's Manor Church . A total of 31 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 14, 2017).
