The county is separated from Pennsylvania to the north by the Mason-Dixon Line . To the south, the Potomac River forms the border with West Virginia and Virginia . Washington County covers an area of ​​1,211 square kilometers; of which 24 square kilometers (2.01 percent) are water surfaces. It borders on the following counties:

Washington County was formed from Prince George's County in 1776. It was named after George Washington (1732–1799), the first President of the United States.

In 1789 Allegany County was spun off.

In 1862, the Battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg was one of the most costly battles of the American Civil War .

Two sites in Washington County have the status of a National Historic Landmark due to their historical significance , the colonial fortification Fort Frederick and the headquarters of John Brown , the Kennedy Farm . A total of 97 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 15, 2017).
