James Dixon novel

James Dixon Roman (born August 11, 1809 in Chester County , Pennsylvania , †  January 19, 1867 in Hagerstown , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Roman attended both public and private schools in West Nottingham . He then moved to Cecil County , Maryland. After a subsequent law degree in Frederick and his admission as a lawyer in 1834, he began to work in Hagerstown in this profession. Politically, he became a member of the Whig Party at that time . In 1847, he served briefly in the Maryland Senate prior to his tenure in the US House of Representatives . In the presidential election of 1848 he was one of the electors for the victorious Zachary Taylor .

In the congressional elections of 1846 Roman was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Thomas Johns Perry on March 4, 1847 . Until March 3, 1849, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was initially shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Roman practiced as a lawyer again. After the Whigs dissolved, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In the presidential election of 1856 he was one of the electors who officially elected James Buchanan president . James Roman was President of Old Hagerstown Bank from 1851 until his death . In the spring of 1861 he was a member of a negotiating commission that unsuccessfully tried to prevent the outbreak of civil war in the federal capital, Washington . He died on January 19, 1867 near Hagerstown, where he was also buried.
