Career

Roscoe Bartlett is a descendant of Josiah Bartlett (1729–1795) and Josiah Bartlett junior (1768–1838), who sat for New Hampshire in the Continental Congress and in the US House of Representatives. He attended Columbia Union College in Takoma Park (Maryland) until 1947 , where he studied theology and biology. He then studied philosophy at the University of Maryland in College Park until 1948 . From 1948 to 1952 he was a faculty member of this university. Between 1952 and 1954 he continued his education with a medical degree at the Loma Linda School of Medicine in California . Until 1956 he was an assistant professor at Howard University Medical School .

Politically, Bartlett became a member of the Republican Party . In 1982 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives. In the 1992 congressional election , however, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Beverly Byron on January 3, 1993 and was re-elected nine times, most recently in 2010 at the age of 84 Years with 61.8 percent of the vote. After Ralph Hall , he was the second oldest member of the House of Representatives in the 112th Congress . In the 2012 congressional elections , Bartlett lost 38 to 59 percent of the vote against Democrat John K. Delaney , who replaced him in parliament on January 3, 2013. Bartlett had fallen victim to the change in the delimitation of the constituencies following the 2010 census, which incorporated some of the suburbs of Washington, DC into his ancestral rural constituency, reducing his electoral base and making him one of the most vulnerable congressmen before the election.

Bartlett served on the Armed Forces Committee , the Science, Space and Technology Committee, and the Committee on Small Business, as well as five subcommittees. Within his group, he was involved in which the tea party movement related Tea Party Caucus and the conservative Republican Study Committee , but also in the moderate Republican Main Street Partnership .

Roscoe Bartlett and his wife, Ellen, have ten children, including their son Joseph , a former MP in Maryland .
