Steny Hamilton Hoyer (born June 14, 1939 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has been a member of the House of Representatives for the fifth constituency of the state of Maryland since 1981 and has been his party's parliamentary leader there since 2006. After the election victory of the Democrats in the 2006 House of Representatives elections , he was elected House Majority Leader on November 16, 2006 (chairman of the (Democratic) majority parliamentary group). After serving as House Minority Whip from 2011 to 2018 when the Democrats were the minority party, he was reappointed House Majority Leader in January 2019 when his party regained a majority after the 2018 elections .

biography

Hoyer was born in New York City but grew up in Mitchellville, Maryland. His family name points to his ancestors who came from Denmark (the family name was originally "Høyer" and was later Anglicised). He graduated from Suitland High School in Suitland , Maryland and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1963 . There he was also a member of the Sigma Chi Brotherhood. In 1966 he earned a doctorate in law ( JD ) from Georgetown University in Washington, DC

Hoyer has three daughters from his marriage to his wife Judy Pickett Hoyer, who died in 1997: Susan, Stefany and Anne. He is a Baptist .

Political career and positions

Hoyer was elected to the Maryland Senate in 1966 at the age of 27 for the constituency of Prince George's County ; In 1975, at the age of 35, he became President of this Chamber of Parliament.

In 1981 he was elected to the House of Representatives as a MP for the 5th District of Maryland; since then he has represented this constituency. From 1987 to 1989, when the Democratic Party had a majority in the House of Representatives, Hoyer held the function of a Whip ; In 2002, when the Democrats were in a minority position, he was re-elected to that role. Domestically, as a congressman, Hoyer has mainly dealt with issues of education policy and the enforcement of civil and human rights. Foreign policy he was an opponent of the Iraq policy of President George W. Bush and advocated a withdrawal ( "responsible redeployment" ) of the American troops from Iraq. However, he has repeatedly made compromises on this issue in previous votes. On the Iranian nuclear issue , Hoyer emphasized that an Iran with nuclear weapons would be "unacceptable" and that in this case military means would also be an option. He is seen by the Democrats in the House of Representatives in the preparation of tougher sanctions against Iran as a driver. After the democratic victory in the 2006 election to the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House in January 2007 . Hoyer was elected House Majority Leader for the term of the 110th Congress. He was able to assert himself with 149: 86 votes against his internal party opponent John Murtha from Pennsylvania . In 2012 he succeeded in being re-elected as MP against Republican Tony O'Donnell in 2012 with 62:35 percent of the vote . He was re-elected in 2014, 2016 and 2018. From 2011 to early 2019 he was a minority whip of the Democratic Group in the House of Representatives. At the 116th Congress of the United States , which met on January 3, 2019 , he was re-elected House Majority Leader of the Democratic Group in the House of Representatives. His new legislative period runs until January 3, 2021.
