Charles Albert "Dutch" Ruppersberger (born January 31, 1946 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American politician . Since 2003 he has represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Dutch Ruppersberger attended Baltimore City College and then studied at the University of Maryland in College Park . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Baltimore School of Law and his admission to the bar in 1970, he began to work in this profession. Between 1972 and 1980 he worked as a public prosecutor. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1985 and 1994 Ruppersberger was a member of the Baltimore County county council ; from 1994 to 2002 he was a county executive . In 1996 and 2000 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In the 2002 congressional election , Ruppersberger was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Robert L. Ehrlich on January 3, 2003 . After seven re-elections so far, including the 2016 election, he can exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2019. He has the option of a further candidacy in 2018. In 2010 he received 64.21% of the vote when he was re-elected. Ruppersberger was meanwhile a member of the armed forces committee and the secret service committee as well as two sub-committees. In the 114th Congress he was a member of the Committee on Appropriations and two of its sub-committees. During his time as a congressman, the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . In the 2012 congressional elections , Ruppersberger prevailed against Republican Nancy Jacobs with 65:31 percent of the vote . After another re-election in 2014, he was able to take up another two-year term as a congressman on January 3, 2015.

Ruppersberger is married and has two children; the family lives in Cockeysville .
