William Julian Albert

William Julian Albert (born August 4, 1816 in Baltimore , Maryland , †  March 29, 1879 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Albert attended Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg until 1833 . He then worked in the hardware store until 1855. Later he also worked in the banking industry. Before the Civil War he was a strong advocate of the Union and fought all secession tendencies in Maryland. Albert was one of the founders and directors of the First National Bank of Maryland . He also became a director of various insurance companies, banks and craft businesses. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In the years 1866 and 1868 he ran unsuccessfully for the Congress .

In the congressional elections of 1872 Albert was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Democrat William Matthew Merrick on March 4, 1873 . Since he refused to run again in 1874, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, William Albert resumed his previous activities. He died on March 29, 1879 in Baltimore, where he was also buried.
