Andrew P. "Andy" Harris (born January 25, 1957 in New York City ) is an American politician . Since 2011 he has represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Andrew Harris studied biology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore until 1977 . This was followed by a medical degree at the same university until 1980. He later served in the United States Navy Reserve Medical Service from 1988 to 2010 . He was also a doctor on active military service during Operation Desert Storm in the Second Gulf War . Otherwise Harris worked in various positions as a medical doctor. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1998 and 2010 he was a member of the Maryland Senate . In 2008 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives.

In the congressional elections of 2010, Harris was the first electoral district of Maryland in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC chosen, where he succeeded the 3 January 2011 Democrat Frank Kratovil took, whom he had defeated in the election. In Congress, Harris was a member of the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure , the Committee on Natural Resources and the Committee on Science, Space and Technology, and a total of five subcommittees. He was also head of the subcommittee on energy and the environment. In the 114th Congress, which has been in office since 2015, he only sat in the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure and in three of its sub-committees. In the 2012 congressional elections , Harris prevailed against Democrat Wendy Rosen with 67:29 percent of the vote. After another re-election in 2014, he was able to take up another two-year term as a congressman on January 3, 2015. Re-elected in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States , which will meet on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

Andrew Harris is married and lives privately in Cockeysville .
