Jamin B. "Jamie" Raskin (born December 13, 1962 in Washington, DC ) is an American lawyer and politician . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Between 1979 and 1983, Jamie Raskin studied government at Harvard University . After completing a law degree at the same university, he became active in law. From 1985 to 1987 he taught government at Harvard and from 1989 to 1991 he was the Maryland Assistant Attorney General . In the meantime he also edited the magazine Harvard Law Review . From 1994 to 1996, Raskin was the assistant dean of the law school at American University . In 2002 and 2003 he was visiting professor at the Institut D'Etudes Sciences Politique in Paris . He has been a full-time professor of law at American University since 1990. He is married to Sarah Bloom Raskin , US Secretary of the Treasury , and lives privately in Takoma Park . In his home country he is a member of numerous organizations and associations.

Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Since 2010 he has been a member of the Maryland Senate , in which he has held the office of Majority Whip since 2012 . In the 2016 congressional election , Raskin was elected to the US House of Representatives in the eighth constituency of Maryland against Republican Dan Cox, where he succeeded Chris Van Hollen , who was elected to the US Senate , on January 3, 2017 has been.
