Ivan Pintar (born May 30, 1888 in Ljubljana ; † April 2, 1963 ibid) was a Slovenian medical historian and gynecologist .

Life and accomplishments

Ivan Pintar studied medicine at the University of Vienna from 1906 to 1912 and then specialized in gynecology at the Wiedner Spital under Josef von Halban . From 1914 to 1918, in the course of the First World War , he spent almost everything at the front: first in Krakow , later in Brest-Litovsk and towards the end of the war in the Carpathians . Between 1919 and 1922 he continued his gynecological training with Alojz Zalokar in Ljubljana and then worked there as a gynecologist for the social security until his retirement in 1953.

Pintar wrote about 140 biographies about Slovenian doctors and naturalists for the 1925 volume of the Slovenian Biographical Lexicon and in 1926 was appointed the 19th President of the Slovenian Society for Medicine. In 1934 a lecture on the history of medicine was taken up at the Medical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana , which Pintar took over and completed his habilitation in this field in 1939 . In 1951 the Institute for Medical History was established at the medical faculty and Pintar became its first president. After Pintar's death in 1963, Peter Borisov did not become the second president of the faculty until 1978 ; the lectures in the history of medicine were taken over by various other colleagues at the time.

His publications on doctors and naturalists in Slovenia can be found mainly in magazines ( Zdravniški vestnik and Babiški vestnik ) and encyclopedias. In 1950 he wrote the first textbook on the history of medicine in the Slovenian language.
