Benjamin Contee

Benjamin Contee (born 1755 near Nottingham , Prince George's County , Province of Maryland , †  November 30, 1815 in Charles County , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1789 and 1791 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Benjamin Contee was the uncle of Alexander Contee Hanson (1786-1819), who represented the State of Maryland in both houses of Congress . He was also a great-uncle of Congressman Thomas Contee Worthington (1782-1847). Contee attended private schools. When the American Revolution broke out , he joined this movement and became an officer in the Continental Army . He made it to the captain of a unit from Maryland. After the war he embarked on a political career. He was a member of the Maryland House of Representatives from 1785 to 1787 : in 1788 he was a member of the Continental Congress . Politically, he was in opposition to the future President George Washington ( anti-administration faction ).

In the congressional elections of 1789 Contee was elected in the third constituency of Maryland in the US House of Representatives, which was still meeting in New York at that time , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1789. Since he renounced another candidacy in 1790, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1791 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Contee traveled to various European countries. He began studying theology, which he continued on his return to the United States. In 1803 he was ordained a clergyman in the Episcopal Church . He then became a pastor at Port Tobacco Village in Charles County. He also served as the presiding judge of the Guardianship Court for Orphans in that district. Benjamin Contee died on November 30, 1815.
