Gabriel Christie

Gabriel Christie (born November 29, 1756 in Perryman , Harford County , Province of Maryland , †  April 1, 1808 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1793 and 1801 he twice represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nothing is known about Christie's youth and school days. During the Revolutionary War he served in a company in the Maryland State Militia. Then he became a member of the local House of Representatives . Politically, he was an opponent of the federal government under President George Washington . In the late 1790s he joined the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson .

In the congressional elections of 1792 Christie was elected in the sixth constituency of Maryland in the US House of Representatives, which was then still in Philadelphia , where he succeeded Upton Sheredine on March 4, 1793 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1797 . In the elections of 1798 he was re-elected to Congress in the sixth district of his state, where he replaced William Matthews on March 4, 1799 , who had been his successor two years earlier. Until March 3, 1801 he was able to spend another term in Congress. During this time, the new federal capital Washington, DC was moved.

Gabriel Christie served on the Havre de Grace parish council in 1800, 1801, and 1806 . He was then head of the tax authorities in the port of Baltimore until his death, where he died on April 1, 1808.
