Newton Ivan Steers Jr. (born January 13, 1917 in Glen Ridge , New Jersey , †  February 11, 1993 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1979 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Newton Steers attended the public schools in White Plains ( New York ) and then until 1935 the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville ( Connecticut ). This was followed by a study at Yale University until 1939 . Until 1943 he studied meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . He then served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and then until 1946 . After the war, Steers studied law, among other things. After being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession. From 1951 to 1953 he was employed by the United States Atomic Energy Commission . From 1953 to 1965 he ran various investment firms in New York State. Between 1967 and 1970 he served as the Maryland State Insurance Commissioner.

Politically, Steers joined the Republican Party . In 1962 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . From 1964 to 1966 Steers was Republican Chairman in Maryland; from 1971 to 1977 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1964 and 1984 he was a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions . In the 1976 congressional election , Steers was elected to the eighth constituency of Maryland in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Gilbert Gude on January 3, 1977 . Since he was not confirmed in 1978, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1979.

1980 Newton Steers competed unsuccessfully for his return to Congress. Two years later, a candidate for the office of lieutenant governor of Maryland failed . He died in Bethesda on February 11, 1993.
