Thomas Francis Johnson
Thomas Francis Johnson (born June 26, 1909 in Worcester County , Maryland , † February 1, 1988 in Seaford , Delaware ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1963 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Thomas Johnson attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at the Staunton Military Academy in Virginia until 1926 . This was followed by courses at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in Snow Hill in 1932 in this profession. He later specialized in international law with a focus on the Near and Middle East and Europe. In Snow Hill, Johnson became chairman of the board of the Commercial National Bank of Snow Hill . In 1934 he also worked as a public prosecutor for a short time. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Maryland Senate from 1938 to 1951 .
In the 1958 congressional election , Johnson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Edward Tylor Miller on January 3, 1959 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1963 . Domestically, this period was determined by the events of the civil rights movement . In 1962, Johnson was accused of accepting illegal gratuities. That cost him re-election that year. In 1968, Johnson was sentenced by a court to a fine of $ 5,000 and six months in prison, of which he served three and a half months, for these offenses. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. Thomas Johnson spent his old age in Berlin and died on February 1, 1988 in Seaford.
