John Kissig Cowen

John Kissig Cowen (born October 28, 1844 in Millersburg , Ohio , †  April 26, 1904 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1897 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Cowen attended the public schools of his home country and then studied at Princeton College until 1866 . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his admission as a lawyer in 1868, he began to work in Mansfield in this profession. He later served as a prosecutor in Holmes County . In 1872 Cowen moved to Baltimore , Maryland. There he worked as a legal advisor for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad until 1896 . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1894 Cowen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Isidor Rayner on March 4, 1895 . Since he refused to run again in 1896, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1897 . Cowen was president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from 1896 to 1901 . He died in Chicago on April 26, 1904 and was buried in his native Millersburg.
