Millersburg is a village in Holmes County , Ohio , United States . At the 2000 census, 3326 people lived in the village. It is the county seat of Holmes County.

geography

Millersburg is located on Killbuck Creek in northeast Ohio, in the midst of Ohio's Amish Country , the world's largest Amish settlement area . State Route 39 (US Route 62) and State Route 83 intersect in the village. The capital Columbus is about 90 miles (144 kilometers) to the southwest. The county capital Millersburg and neighboring Berlin are known as tourist centers and starting points for visits to the Amish settlements.

history

The first settlement on Killbuck Creek, later called Old Town , was founded by Adam Johnson and Charles Miller in November 1815. Difficulties in selling the land hampered development, so on April 8, 1824 Andrew Johnston and Charles Miller laid the foundation stone for a little further south a second settlement, the New Town . The first church was built in 1830 and the population had grown to 320 people. Despite a major fire around 1844, Millersburg already had 673 residents, four churches and a number of shops and businesses, including two newspaper publishers, in 1846.

Culture and sights

The center of Millersburg has been preserved as a largely closed ensemble of residential and commercial buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, advertised as Historic Downtown Millersburg and listed as a National Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places . Open to the public are the Court and Jail Buildings from 1884 to 1886, the Millersburg Glass Museum, and the Victorian House Museum run by the Holmes County Historical Society . As an institution of supraregional importance, the Ohio Amish Library is located in Millerstown, a library and publisher for Amish religion and culture.
