John Lee (politician, 1788)

John Lee (born January 30, 1788 in Frederick , Maryland , †  May 17, 1871 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1823 and 1825 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Lee was the son of Governor Thomas Sim Lee (1745-1819). He enjoyed private schooling and then studied at Harvard University . After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar; but he did not work in this profession. Instead, he ran his Needwood estate in Frederick County . Originally, Lee was a member of the Federalists . He later joined the Democratic Republican Party . Within this party he belonged to the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson .

In the congressional election of 1822 Lee was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded John Nelson on March 4, 1823 . There he was able to complete a legislative period until March 3, 1825. He headed the organizing committee for the visit of the Marquis de La Fayette . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Lee served in the Maryland House of Representatives and the State Senate . He also worked for the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Co. and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad . Otherwise, Lee continued to operate his farm. He died on May 17, 1871 while visiting New York and was buried in Baltimore .
