William Pinkney
William Pinkney (born March 17, 1764 in Annapolis , Province of Maryland , † February 25, 1822 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer, diplomat , US senator and attorney general (Attorney General) .
Studies and professional career
Pinkney completed studies in medicine and law . After being admitted to the bar in 1786, he practiced law in Harford County for several years . He served as a major in the United States Army during the British-American War of 1812 . As such, he was wounded in the battle of Bladensburg on August 24, 1814.
Political career
MP and Mayor
Pinkney was early on also politically active as a member of the Constitutional Convention of Maryland. From 1786 to 1792 he sat in the Maryland House of Representatives for the first time . In 1791 he was a brief member of the United States House of Representatives , where he represented the third congressional constituency of Maryland.
After a renewed membership in the Maryland House of Representatives in 1795, he was Mayor of Annapolis from 1795 to 1800 . From 1805 to 1806 he was Attorney General of Maryland. In 1811 Pinkney became a member of the Maryland Senate . After the British-American War he was again from 1815 to 1816 as a representative of the fifth congressional electoral district of Maryland member of the US House of Representatives.
Diplomat, Attorney General, and US Senator
In addition to his political career, he also took on diplomatic posts. From 1806 to 1807 he was first alongside James Monroe envoy and then as his successor from 1808 to 1811 Envoy Plenipotentiary to the United Kingdom .
On December 11, 1811, US President James Madison appointed him as Attorney General in his cabinet . He held this office until his replacement by Richard Rush on February 9, 1814.
From 1816 to 1818 he again took on an activity in the diplomatic corps as Plenipotentiary Envoy in Russia . During this time he was also entrusted with a special mission in Naples .
Most recently, Pinkney, a member of the Democratic Republican Party , was a US Senator from 1819 until his death in 1822 .
