William Purnell Jackson
William Purnell Jackson (born January 11, 1868 in Salisbury , Maryland , † March 7, 1939 ) was an American politician who belonged to the United States Senate for the Republican Party .
William P. Jackson, whose father William Humphreys Jackson was also politically active and sat for Maryland in the US House of Representatives between 1901 and 1909 , attended public schools in Wicomico County and a private school in Dover . From 1887 he worked in the lumber trade.
In 1908 Jackson was elected to the Republican National Committee . After the death of US Senator Isidor Rayner on December 25, 1912, Jackson was named as his successor in Congress . There he became chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State . In the by-election for the Senate seat, Jackson did not run, so he resigned from the Senate on January 28, 1914. He was succeeded by Blair Lee .
Jackson went back to his business, but continued to be active in politics and served from 1918 to 1920 as State Treasurer of Maryland. He also became President of Salisbury National Bank and Director of the Baltimore, Chesapeake & Atlantic Railroad .
In 1939 William Jackson died in his hometown of Salisbury. The house he built there in 1893 was added to the list of National Historic Landmarks as Sen. William P. Jackson House in 1976 , but was demolished that same year.
