James Lloyd (politician, 1745)
James Lloyd (* 1745 near Chestertown , Province of Maryland , † 1820 near Easton , Maryland ) was an American politician ( Federalist Party ) who represented the state of Maryland in the US Senate .
James Lloyd received a classical school education before he studied law, was admitted to the bar and began to practice as a lawyer. He fought in 1776 with the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Kent County Militia in the Revolutionary War . He later became active again in the British-American War , where he held the rank of general in the US Army . He gained great fame when he freed Francis Scott Key from Fort McHenry .
Lloyd began his political career in 1778 as a member of the House of Representatives from Maryland , where he initially remained until 1779. Other terms followed there from 1781 to 1783 and 1793 and 1795. He was a member of the Maryland Senate between 1784 and 1785. On December 11, 1797, he entered the US Senate, which was still in Philadelphia at the time . He took the place of John Henry , who had been elected governor . As a Senator, he played a major role in the creation of the Sedition Act , part of the Alien and Sedition Acts . On December 1, 1800, shortly after Congress moved to Washington, DC , Lloyd resigned for his part. As a result he worked again as a lawyer.
