Ephraim King Wilson (born December 22, 1821 in Snow Hill , Worcester County , Maryland , † February 24, 1891 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who served in the US House of Representatives from 1873 to 1875 and then served in the US Senate from 1885 until his death . He was the grandson of John Gunby , a war hero in the American Revolutionary War , and the adoptive father of the future Governor of Maryland, John Walter Smith .

Private life

Wilson attended the Union Academy at Snow Hill and the Washington Academy in Princess Anne , Maryland. He then graduated from Jefferson College in 1840 , where he subsequently taught for six years. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1848. He then began to practice in Snow Hill; however, he had to give up his practice as a lawyer in 1867 due to health problems and retired to his farm to relax. The following year he served as the examiner and treasurer of the Worcester County School Board. He later served as judge in the Maryland First Judicial District from 1878 to 1884.

Political career

He chose a political career when he became a member of the Maryland House of Representatives in 1847 . After that he was the Democratic presidential elector in 1852. He was also elected to the 43rd US Congress , where he represented the 1st Congressional District of Maryland. Wilson stayed there from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875. In 1874, he decided against running for the US Congress again . Ten years later he was elected to the US Senate. He took up his post on March 4, 1885 and held it until his death on February 24, 1891. In late 1890 he was re-elected for a second term beginning March 4, 1891. He was then buried in the Makemie Presbyterian Churchyard in Snow Hill.
