Joshua Weldon Miles (born December 9, 1858 in Somerset County , Maryland , †  March 4, 1929 in Baltimore , Maryland) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1897 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joshua Miles attended private schools in his home country as well as the Marion Academy . He then studied until 1878 at Western Maryland College in Westminster . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1880, he began to work in Princess Anne in this profession. Between 1883 and 1887 he served as a prosecutor in Somerset County. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1894 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Maryland , where he succeeded Winder Laird Henry on March 4, 1895 . Since he was defeated by Republican Isaac Ambrose Barber in 1896 , he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1897 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Joshua Miles worked as a lawyer again in addition to his other activities. From 1900 until his death he was President of the Bank of Somerset . In 1900, 1912, 1920 and 1924 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions . He was also the curator of Western Maryland College for 30 years . Miles was also a tax collector from 1914 to 1921. He died in Baltimore on March 4, 1929.
