John Montgomery (politician, 1764)

John Montgomery (* 1764 in Carlisle , Province of Pennsylvania , † July 17, 1828 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1807 and 1811 he represented the state of Maryland in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Montgomery received a classical school education. After a subsequent law degree and his license to practice law in 1791, he began to work in this profession in Harford County , Maryland. At the same time he embarked on a political career. He served in the Maryland House of Representatives from 1793 to 1798 . In the late 1790s he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . From 1793 to 1796 Montgomery served as a prosecutor. In the congressional election of 1806 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John Archer on March 4, 1807 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on April 29, 1811 .

His resignation came after he was appointed Attorney General of the State of Maryland. He held this office until 1818. During the British-American War he was captain of the Baltimore Union Artillery . In 1819 Montgomery was again a member of the state parliament. Between 1820 and 1826 he was two-time mayor of Baltimore , where he had lived since 1811. He died there on July 17, 1828.
