J. Joseph Curran

J. Joseph Curran Jr. (born July 7, 1931 in West Palm Beach , Florida ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 1987 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Maryland .

Career

Joseph Curran attended the Baltimore , Maryland public schools and Loyola High School there . He then studied at the University of Baltimore . Between 1951 and 1955, including during the Korean War , he served in the Air Force . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Baltimore and his admission as a lawyer in 1959, he began to work in this profession. He later also became a member of the Maryland Bar Association. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a democrat . Between 1959 and 1963 he was a member of the Maryland House of Representatives ; from 1963 to 1983 he was a member of the local state senate .

In 1982 Curran was elected Lieutenant Governor of Maryland alongside Harry Hughes . He held this office between 1983 and 1987. He was Deputy Governor . He then held the post of Attorney General of his state between 1987 and 2007 . This was the longest term in office in Maryland history. In this capacity he campaigned for better protection of children and against drug abuse. Curran has received numerous honors and awards throughout his life. He has four children with his wife Barbara. One of his sons-in-law is Governor Martin O'Malley .
