Melvin Steinberg

Melvin A. Steinberg (born October 4, 1933 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American politician . Between 1987 and 1995 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Maryland.

Career

Melvin Steinberg attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at the University of Baltimore until 1952 . After completing a law degree at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1955, he began to work in this profession. He previously served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1957 . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1967 and 1987 he was a member of the Maryland Senate , of which he had been president since 1983. From 1975 to 1978 who was there deputy chairman of the judicial committee; between 1979 and 1982 he headed the finance committee. He was also a member and deputy chairman of several other committees during his time in the State Senate.

In 1986 Steinberg was elected lieutenant governor of Maryland alongside William Donald Schaefer . He held this office after being re-elected between 1987 and 1995. He acted as the governor's deputy . He was also a member of numerous committees and associations. There were occasional personal and political differences with Governor Schaefer. In 1994 he unsuccessfully applied for his party's nomination for governor. He then worked as a lobbyist.
