Christopher C. Cox
Christopher Christian Cox (born August 26, 1816 in Baltimore , Maryland , † November 25, 1882 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1868 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Maryland.
Career
Christopher Cox first graduated from Yale College . After a subsequent medical degree and his license as a doctor, he began to work in Easton in 1843 in this profession. Politically, he was a unionist. In 1859 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives . At the beginning of the civil war he served in the medical service in the army of the Union .
In 1864, Cox was elected Maryland's first lieutenant governor. He held this office between 1865 and 1868. He was deputy to Governor Augustus Bradford and, from 1866, from his successor Thomas Swann . The office of vice governor was only newly introduced at that time and abolished again in 1868. This made Cox the only lieutenant governor of his state until 1970, the year this office was reinstated. After that he was a professor at Georgetown College . In 1871 he became chairman of the Washington Health Council; in 1879 he was the American representative at an international exhibition in Australia ( Australian International Exposition ). In doing so, he contracted an illness from which he could no longer properly recover. He died in Washington on November 25, 1882 and was buried in Easton.
