Michael Stephen Steele (born October 19, 1958 at Andrews Air Force Base , Maryland ) is an American politician . From 2009 to 2011 he was chairman of the Republican National Committee , the party organization of the Republicans . Steele was the first African American to hold this post.

Steele was born in 1958 at Andrews Air Force Base in Prince George's County and grew up in Washington, DC . He received a scholarship to study at Johns Hopkins University and graduated in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in international relations. Originally the priesthood Aiming, he spent three years in a seminary of the Augustinian Order in Pennsylvania . However, Steele decided to pursue a legal career and studied at Georgetown University , at whose Law Center he graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1991 .

From 2003 to 2007 he was Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. Steele was the first Republican to hold this post. Steele is married and has two sons.

In January 2011 he ran for re-election and faced four opposing candidates. In the first round of elections, Steele was able to unite 44 of 168 votes, which means that he was only one vote behind the leading Reince Priebus at the time . In the following ballots, however, the number of Steele's voters fell; in the fourth round he received only 28 votes. He was the first of the five applicants to withdraw his candidacy; Reince Priebus was then elected as his successor in the seventh ballot.
