First established as Camp Springs Army Air Field on August 25, 1941 , the airfield began operations on May 2, 1943. In honor of General Frank M. Andrews , who headed air operations in Europe during World War II and had a fatal accident in Iceland on May 3, 1943 , the base was renamed Andrews Field on March 31, 1945 . With the establishment of the US Air Force in 1948, the name changed to Andrews Air Force Base .

The US government's VIP aircraft ( Air Force One and Air Force Two ) have been stationed here since July 1961 . In June 2006, the 316th Wing of the AFDW took over the management of the 89th Airlift Wing of the Air Mobility Command .
