Fountain figure

The Läuferbrunnen is one of Bern's old town fountains from the 16th century and is now located on the Läuferplatz in the city of Bern , Switzerland .

history

It was created by Hans Gieng and his journeymen around 1545 , originally stood in front of the last house on Nydeggstalden and was moved to its current location in 1827, where there had previously been a wash house. Until the 17th century it was called Staldenbrunnen or Brunnen bei Unterstor (because of its proximity to the city gate at the Untertorbrücke ).

The fountain figure represents a herald or fast messenger who is on foot and is therefore called a runner. He wears the coat of arms of the city of Bern on his chest, a runner's spike on his shoulder and a runner's rifle on his back. With his left hand he grasps the hilt of a short sword and is preceded by a bear cub, which is also equipped as a messenger.

The fountain figure is a copy from 1953. The original is in the Historical Museum of the City of Bern.
