Venner fountain

The Venner Fountain is located on the town hall square in Bern and is one of Bern's old town fountains from the 16th century.

history

The fountain figure represents a Venner , an armored Bernese standard bearer. It was created in 1542 by Hans Gieng as a stone fountain, who replaced a wooden system from the 14th century on Schwendplatz above Nydeggstalden .

The fountain was moved in 1844 when the Nydegg Bridge was being built . From 1880 to 1913 the figure and the capital with the four masks stood on the Amthausgassbrunnen in Amthausgasse , until they were moved to their current location in 1913.

The figure is a copy, the original is in the Bernisches Historisches Museum .
