history

An originally wooden fountain was replaced by a stone one in 1527. The fountain figure, dated 1543, is attributed to Hans Gieng . It represents an armed rifleman . In his right hand he carries the banner of the Society to Schützen , which was repealed in 1799 and which the Reismusketen-Schützengesellschaft has been leading ever since. He is holding a sword in his left hand. Between his legs a bear cub aims a rifle at the arbors. At the original location of the fountain, the little bear aimed at the entrance of the former home of the shooting society.

In 1558 the sword had to be repaired, in 1670 the column and the base of the fountain were replaced under the direction of the minster master craftsman Abraham Dünz . In 1783/84 the fountain basin and the pedestal were replaced. In the years 1890 and 1939 the Schützenbrunnen was relocated twice, the latter time the fountain was rotated 180 degrees, and parts of the pedestal and the figure were replaced. When the fountain was moved in April 2013, the fountain figure was badly damaged and had to be professionally repaired at great expense.
