The Maybrunnen in Bern's Postgasse

The Maybrunnen , also known as Unterer Postgassbrunnen or Hormatsbrunnen , stands in front of the house at Postgasse 31 in the old town of Bern . It belongs to the non-figurative Bernese fountains of the 18th and 19th centuries. Century. Together with the Kronenbrunnen it is one of the two wells in Postgasse that are in operation.

history

The Maybrunnen, or Unterer Postgassbrunnen at that time, has stood since the middle of the 19th century , in the version known today at the same location in front of house number 31 in Postgasse. The latter was officially called Hormansgasse or Hormatsgasse until 1798 and was also called that way well into the 19th century. The Postgasse is the eastern, lower part of the Hormansgasse or Hormatsgasse , the western, upper part is the Rathausgasse, formerly Metzgergasse.

The first time a Laufbrunnen , at that time still known as Hormatsbrunnen , was mentioned in 1696 in the lower, eastern part of Hormannsgasse . From 1712 to 1714, the fountain system was extensively renovated under the direction of Bern master craftsman Samuel Baumgartner and appeared for the first time on the Bern city map by Johann Adam Riediger around 1717.

In 1738 the fountain received an octagonal main basin made of hard stone and probably also a side trough made of the same material. The square stick known today was probably set in the middle of the 19th century. The stick at right angles to the two troughs is equipped with a twin fountain tube cast from iron, on top of which is a cover plate with a vase, which suggests the Empire period . This appearance has been preserved to this day.
