Paul Hofer (art historian)

Paul Hofer (born August 8, 1909 in Bern ; † December 26, 1995 there ) was a Swiss art historian who specialized in the history of architecture and urban development.

Life

Paul Hofer was born on August 8, 1909 as the son of Friedrich Hofer in Bern. From 1931 to 1933, Paul Hofer studied art history at the University of Munich and then at the University of Bern , where he completed his doctorate in 1938 . Hofer completed his habilitation in 1948 and worked from 1954 to 1962 as a professor of art and architectural history at the University of Bern and from 1962 to 1964 at the University of Lausanne . Most recently, from 1964 to 1980, he held the chair for urban history and restoration at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich .

Paul Hofer, who married Bertha Gertrud Wild in 1942, died on December 26, 1995 at the age of 86 in Bern. His estate is in the Bern Burger Library .

Act

Hofer's works include the inventory of architectural monuments in the city of Bern, Art Monuments of Switzerland, Canton Bern , Volumes 1 to 3 and 5, 1947–69, The cities of the Central Plateau in the Middle Ages and the cities in Asia Minor and Italy . In his research , Paul Hofer first recorded the building structures and, based on this, formulated theoretical interpretation patterns that put the spatial concept in the foreground.
