The Zähringerbrunnen sale in the Kramgasse in the historic center of the city of Bern and is one of the Swiss capital, fountain from the 16th century.

history

It was built in 1535 by Hans Hiltprand and stands below the Zytglogge tower. The current name of the fountain did not appear until the 19th century and is reminiscent of Bern's city founder Berchtold V. von Zähringen . In addition, the facility was also called Finstergässlibrunnen or Bärenbrunnen .

The fountain figure is a standing bear with a helmet and two swords in its belt . The right paw holds a banner , the left a shield . The banner and shield show a golden lion on a red background. It is a variant of the coat of arms, which was also used by the Zähringers. A bear cub sits between the legs of the big bear and is devouring a grape.

Not to be confused with the Zähringerbrunnen is the Zähringer Monument in Nydegghöfli in Nydeggkirche .
