The Pfeiferbrunnen in Bern

The Pfeiferbrunnen is in the Spitalgasse in Bern and belongs to the main group of figure fountains of the 16th century in the old town of Bern .

history

The fountain, created by Hans Gieng in 1545/46 , stood between Ryffli- and Storchengässchen in front of the Gasthof zum Kreuz until 1638, since 1594 "Gasthof zum Storchen ", which is why the fountain was originally called the Storchenbrunnen . The traveling minstrels once staying at the inn are said to be the reason that the fountain figure depicts a bagpiper , a free recreation of Dürer's copper engraving Der Sackpfeifer from 1514 . Originally, this figure was probably a traveling musician playing bagpipe .

According to the city bill of 1482, "Trummeter (city trumpeters), the pfeiffer, the cantor, the organist and the Lüttenschlaher" worked as musicians for the cathedral and at receptions and carnival games.

A parchment on the tree trunk at the foot of the figure described the privilege of September 3, 1507 with the state recognition of the Piper Brotherhood as a kind of guild, in which the town pipers were also included. The freedom letter gave the minstrels a monopoly:

"So then we wave that dhein heimbscher still frömder spilman on dhein hochzyt or brutlouff come, or in some belonung sölle, he'll then be called by the one who is hochzyt, and whoever is also called, should be Satisfied with a little reward, as is traditional and customary. "

According to the council manual from the same period, we know that

"Under myner gentlemen schalmierpfifferen a küng and sust be two conductors."

In the 1870s, the fountain was so desolate that the inscription on the parchment could no longer be recognized or reconstructed. On the occasion of the renovation of the fountain in 1874, the parchment was marked with the inscription Der Pfyffer Freedom Letter 1507 , this refers to the fact that the Brotherhood of Minstrels received the city's freedom letter in 1507 . During this renovation, the fountain figure was probably dressed for the first time in the colors used by the town whistles.

In the years that followed, the condition of the octagonal fountain bowl continued to suffer, initially with a cement coating on the inside. The fountain had to be renovated and painted again for the founding ceremony. On the occasion of this renovation, the fountain received the new, still existing bowl, which was made by the sculptor Laurenti. In 1905 and 1926 the fountain was repainted again.

In 1919 the Pfeifferbrunnen was moved for traffic reasons, and the Sudeltrog was also removed.
