Stettbrunnen

The Stettbrunnen , originally a spring well and formerly also known as the Schlachthausbrunnen , is located on the Brunngasshalde in Bern's old town and is the oldest still in operation in the city of Bern .

history

The Stettbrunnen was first mentioned in 1377 and gave the Brunngasse its name. It draws its water from its own source, the groundwater emerges in what was once a north-facing Quertobel, which had its counterpart in the Frickgraben, which opened to the south. Until 1848 a wooden pipe delivered the spring water into a wooden trough. This fountain has always had the function of a wash house. Mid-19th century, the butcher servants had joined up at the well that there cleaned the intestines of slaughtered animals, which is why the Stettbrunnen at that time also slaughterhouse fountain was named. In 1855 the walls were built with ashlar pieces and instead of the wooden well trough, three large stone fountain troughs were erected. The Stettbrunnen was renovated in 1974 and 1975.
