history
The Bärenplatz fountain has stood in the middle of Bärenplatz since 1901. Before that, it had been standing in front of the old casino on the northwest corner of today's Bundesplatz since 1840 ; in its place stands the corner building with the headquarters of the Berner Kantonalbank today .
The fountain, which consists of a basin and a stick, was built in 1840 according to the plans of architect Beat Rudolf von Sinner in 1839 by the stonemason Bargetzi in Solothurn , delivered and installed in place of the former Waisenhausplatz fountain . The basin is an octagonal bowl with neo-Gothic tracery jewelry . On the side facing Spitalgasse , the year 1840 is chiseled as a Roman number MDCCCXXXX in fracture . The floor consists of a octagonal pedestal with four arranged crosswise fountain tubes, cast by Escher Wyss & Cie in Zurich and a standing column on circular truss and canopy - Capital . The basin and stick are made of white Solothurn shell limestone .
After the move to Bärenplatz, the fountain was given its first fountain figure above the canopy capital in 1904/05. The sandstone work, a group of bears playing, was created by the sculptor Ferdinand Huttenlocher based on a design by Rudolf Münger .
After the deaths of Huttenlocher and Münger, a competition was started among the Bernese sculptors for a new fountain sculpture. The competition was won by Walter Linck with his figure of a returning Bernese rice walker with a rising bear and executed in French limestone ; The rising bear served as a support figure, the chain and sword of the rice paddock are made of metal. This image has graced the Bärenplatz fountain since 1935.
