The so-called Anna-Seiler-Brunnen (eigtl. Kefibrunnen ) stands in the Marktgasse in front of the Käfigturm and belongs to the main group of figure fountains of the 16th century in the old town of Bern , Switzerland .

history

The fountain was built in 1545/46 to replace a fountain from the 14th century. The fountain figure shows a woman holding a bowl in one hand and pouring water into it from a jug with the other hand. It comes from the workshop of Hans Gieng and probably symbolizes the cardinal virtue of moderation ; which would explain the name Temperantia fountain , which was used until the 19th century . Since the fountain is near the cage tower, which used to be a prison, it was originally called by der Gefangenschaft or Kefibrunnen (after Chefi , the Bernese word for prison).

The name we use today goes back to Karl Howald . He wanted to recognize Anna Seiler in the statue, who founded a hospital in Bern in 1354 . This was later called Inselspital , and that is what the University Hospital in Bern is still called today .
