history

The first pavement in the alley was made of clay and stone. It turned into a swamp in bad weather. Therefore boardwalks had to be laid along the arbors to use the softened alley floor. The first actual paving of the Marktgasse dates back to 1399. For this purpose, round stones were taken from the Aare . At the same time, the city stream was captured in tubes.

In the late 15th century the street was called "Neuenstadt", this expression was partly used until around 1830. In the lower part of the "Märitgasse" at the height of the old "Krone", the streets stood above the brook until the half of the 15th century lower bread and meat bowl and at the bottom the tannery . Already in the 18th century, the street was called Wybermärit , which referred to the market where women sold their goods (mainly fruit, eggs and vegetables). The name Wybermärit only went out of use in the 20th century, and in 1798 it was used as today's official name Marktgasse (French Rue du Marché ). It was planned to pave the street in 1937, but this was given up in favor of a new paving that was carried out in 1938/1939.

The Anna-Seiler-Brunnen and the Schützenbrunnen are located in Marktgasse .
