Johann-Peter Hinz (born March 18, 1941 in Kolberg , Pomerania ; † February 11, 2007 in Halberstadt ) was a German artist and sculptor and local politician in Saxony-Anhalt.

Life

Peter Hinz was born in Kolberg in 1941, where his father Paulus Hinz was pastor at Kolberg Cathedral. Several artists come from the Hinz family, for example the older brother was the sculptor Erdmann-Michael Hinz (1933–1950), the younger brother is the metal sculptor Jörg-Tilmann Hinz , his nephews are the sculptors Michael Weihe , Christoph Weihe and Daniel Priese .

In 1946, the father got a job at Halberstadt Cathedral, which is why the family moved there. There he first attended the Martineum (cathedral and Ratsgymnasium) and studied metal design from 1965 to 1970 (with Irmtraud Ohme, among others ) at the University of Industrial Design in Halle, Burg Giebichenstein . His eldest brother Christoph Paulus Otto Friedrich Hinz (* 1928, † 1991) was a student pastor of the Evangelical Student Community of Halle (term of office 1955–1963), which was then based in the former Jenastift in the city of Saale. Johann-Peter Hinz visited the ESG Halle regularly during his studies under the successor of his brother, student pastor Rudolf Schulze (term of office 1964–1970).

Hinz remained connected to Halberstadt for a lifetime. The Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk had shown Johann-Peter Hinz working in his hometown in the 2002 television film "Von Quedlinburg nach Halberstadt" and had given him a chance to speak about his professional and voluntary work, and this film was broadcast several times.

As a convinced Christian, as a metal designer and committed politician, Hinz campaigned for the preservation of Halberstadt's old town. In 1989 he was a co-initiator of the peaceful revolution in the city. After 1989 he became city parliament president. In 1992 he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his commitment and his outstanding role as an initiator in the reconstruction of the city center . In 2001 he became an honorary citizen of Halberstadt.
